Medical technology could arguably be one of the most exciting areas of technology to watch grow by the day.

We are seeing fewer and fewer cases of some diseases that we never would have imaged eradicating all thanks to medical tech, which makes it an even more exciting area to explore.

Medical technology is the integration of innovative technology to detect diseases, test treatments and improve processes in the medical field.  Early, seemingly commoditized medical tech examples include adhesive bandages, braces or more recently MRI technology.

Heartwarming, Lifesaving Medical Technologies:

1. Genome editing

Although ethically questioned, genome editing is enabling researchers to cure diseases like sickle cell disease, cystic fibrosis, hemophilia, and non-genetic disorders including HIV/AIDS, mental illness and cancer.

2. Artificial Intelligence

Bill Gates has been a long time supporter of artificial intelligence, as his belief the medical benefits for humanity will outweigh labor market concerns.

Currently, AI is being used to diagnose Alzheimer’s Disease in patients that have not yet begun to see its effects. This is done through a series of MRIs that depict where different activities are taken place in the brain.

Unlike the human eye, AI is able to detect which will develop Alzheimer’s based on existing brain scans of current Alzheimer’s patients.

3. Nanotherapy

Nanotherapy has become the suggested alternative to invasive surgery, that lowers costs for patients.

The technology is primarily being used to treat cancer patients as it can distinguish between healthy and unhealthy cells, allowing for more aggressive treatment of infected cells without concern for the survival of healthy cells.

4. Record Keeping

Blockchain has become the solution to protecting patient’s medical records, giving them the authorization to grant access to their records to doctors or researchers.

5. 3D Printing

In China, 3D printing saved the life of a nine-month-old baby. The baby born with a heart defect was given as low as 20% chance to make it to his first birthday if treatment was delayed.

Surgeon Zhang Xueqin acted quickly, building a life-size model of the babies heart using a 3D printer to plan and practice the surgery.

6. Telehealth

The ability to seek medical care through digital devices via chat or video chat enables individuals to receive treatment faster, or detect illnesses earlier as they may not have taken the time to make an appointment and visit the doctor’s office.

Telepresence recently surpassed the boundaries of humanity, when a physician visible through a robot shared with a man in Fremont, California that he was fatally ill.  The 78-year-old man lived one more day, after discussing pain management with the virtual doctor.

The family and nurse present that day can attest to the distance telepresence created between doctor and patient, taking the humanity out of the field.

While telepresence is a valuable addition to medical technology, this unfortunate situation served as a reminder that there is still a need for human contact in the medical field to deliver diagnosis and sympathize with the person physically in front of them.

While the healthcare industry continues to test the boundaries of medical technology, there is no denying the incredible impact it will have in saving patients lives through preventative care, detection, and treatment.
