Robotics is a branch of engineering and science that incorporates robots, a machine that resembles a human but programmable to be autonomous or semi-autonomous.

A variety of industries have begun to use robotics to streamline processes and increase productivity.


Robots are used by hospitals across the country to deliver meals, medicines, and supplies to patients, allowing the doctors and nurses to focus on value-added activities like caring for the patients or planning treatments.


Farmers are able to increase productivity by using robots in self-driving tractors through GPS technologies.  Recently operations like mowing and weed removal are using robotics and sensor technology.

Food Service

Robots will be available to the consumer in the coming years that will be able to cook meals in the customer’s home kitchen through a mobile app.

This will be increasingly possible as smart kitchen appliances capture more market share.


Manufacturing was one of the first industries to adopt robotics into their processes, with concerns about the implications to the labor market.  

Robots are ideal for repetitive and precise tasks when guided by the consumer. Ergonomically speaking, movements done too frequently can cause damage in the human body which was not created to do the same movement every 20 seconds for 8 hours.

Robotics can prevent physical damage to employee’s bodies but at the risk of taking their jobs entirely.


The military is implementing unmanned drones, a form of robotics, into their warfare tactics.  Aside from carrying out attacks, drones can be used for support and surveillance.

While drones can be released into dangerous scenarios like hostage situations and disasters to provide real-time data to officials and first responders, in order to make educated decisions without placing humans in harm’s way.  

What’s the difference between Artificial Intelligence and Robots?

Ah, the magic question. While some robots are artificially intelligent, artificial intelligence is only a component of robotics.  Artificial intelligence develops software that can carry out tasks that would require human intelligence.

AI is not a physical mechanism like a robot, but rather is a component of robotics that is used to train and control robots. Robots still require sensors, physical components, and non-AI programming to carry out their mission.

Careers in Robotics

Robotics engineers are responsible for researching, coding, assembling and testing robots.  

Often a robotic engineering degree is offered within the mechanical or aerospace engineering degree track as an area of focus.  

Engineers currently in the workforce that seek to learn more about programming and monitoring robots may choose to pursue a graduate program in robotics. The course load often includes: “machine learning, control systems, design, motion planning, and hybrid systems.

A robotics engineer upon graduation could expect pay comparable to a mechanical engineer at $83,590.  An aerospace engineer looking to focus on robotics is in higher demand and could expect a salary of $107,830.

As robotics expands into a variety of industries, an understanding or focus in robotics could distinguish an applicant in the job market as a valuable contribution to the company.

There is no denying the value of robotics in the future of industries to increase productivity and worker safety.
